Farmers Protest in Belagavi Demands Swaminathan Report Implementation on 12th December, 2025.

Farmers Protest in Belagavi

Belagavi: Farmer organizations intensified their protests near the Suvarna Vidhana Soudha (SVS) on Thursday, reiterating a wide range of long-pending demands aimed at improving agricultural conditions and strengthening farmers’ livelihoods in Karnataka. The agitation, which drew participation from several groups, was led by the Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha (KRRS) under the leadership of its president, Chunappa Pujari.

Led by KRRS president Chunappa Pujari, the farmers sought an additional ₹1,000 per tonne for sugarcane from both Central and State governments, along with the opening of purchase centers for crops such as maize and millet.

Farmers voiced their concerns over issues related to sugarcane pricing, access to basic facilities, and policy decisions they believe are adversely affecting the farming community. One of the key demands raised during the protest was the installation of digital weighing machines in all sugar factories.

Farmers argued that manual weighing often leads to discrepancies and losses, and only a digital system can ensure accuracy, transparency, and fairness in transactions. They insisted that the government must mandate this change immediately to protect farmers from being underpaid for their produce.

The protestors also demanded that commissioners and adequate staff be appointed to the Sugar Commissioner’s office in Belagavi. They noted that the lack of proper staffing has led to significant delays in addressing farmers’ grievances, processing documents, and regulating factory operations. According to the farmers, strengthening the administrative machinery is essential to ensure smoother functioning of sugar factories and quicker resolution of issues.

Another major concern raised was the need to increase the price of milk. Farmers stated that the current procurement rates do not cover production costs, leaving dairy farmers struggling. An increase in the support price, they argued, would directly benefit thousands of small and marginal farmers who rely on dairy as a primary or supplementary source of income. Improved rates would also encourage more farmers to continue in the dairy sector without incurring losses.

The agitating groups further demanded that land given to the Inamdar family be taken back and redistributed to farmers. They alleged that the land rightfully belongs to the farming community and should be returned for agricultural use. They also urged the government to expedite irrigation projects in North Karnataka, stating that incomplete or delayed projects have left vast stretches of farmland dependent on erratic rainfall. Proper irrigation facilities, they said, would significantly boost productivity and reduce farmers’ vulnerability to drought.

In addition, the farmers called for the withdrawal of agricultural laws that they believe are harmful to their interests. They expressed concerns that certain policies make them more dependent on corporations and middlemen, reducing their bargaining power and threatening their long-term economic stability. The protestors urged the government to review these laws in consultation with farmer organizations.

On the same day, the Karnataka State Water Supply Employees’ Mahasangh also staged a protest, highlighting issues related to job security and staffing. The employees demanded the direct recruitment of workers who have been serving in corporations, municipalities, and town panchayats for nearly 20 years. They argued that despite decades of service, many workers continue to remain in temporary positions without proper recognition, benefits, or stability. The Mahasangh insisted that these employees deserve immediate regularization and fair treatment.

Both protests highlighted the growing frustration among farmers and public service workers, reinforcing the need for the government to take prompt action. As the winter session of the legislature continues at the Suvarna Vidhana Soudha, protestors hope their voices will be heard and their demands addressed without further delay.
