History Of Belagavi City Corporation : Shaping Belagavi Since 1851.

Belagavi City Corporation is the municipal governing body of the city of Belagavi in the state of Karnataka. The Corporation is also known as Belagavi Mahanagara Palike.
The Municipal Corporation consists of democratically elected members and is headed by a mayor and administers the city’s infrastructure and administration.

The Belagavi City Corporation was established in 1st December 1851 as Belgaum City Municipal Corporation Committee. It had a population of 23,115 and was having an income of 35,460 in the year 1851. It was the first Municipal Corporation established in Bombay Karnataka region. The Corporation is responsible for administering the city’s infrastructure and services, which includes Urban Planning, Water Supply, Fire Services, Waste Management, Environmental Protection, Public Health and for the development of the weaker sections of the society.

In the year 2021 local elections, the BJP secured a majority in the BCC by winning 35 out of 58 seats. The Municipal Corporation Belagavi elections were fought before the year 2022 on the linguistic basis. The Deputy Mayors Post was limited to General Woman and the Mayors post was reserved for General Category. The post of Mayor is reserved for General category and the Deputy Mayor’s post was limited to General Woman.

In the year 2023, the public work department minister Satish Jarkiholi instructed the city corporation to start working on merging the villages attached to the city of Belagavi. The Plan is increased to the number of City Corporation wards of up to 90 from 58.

The City Corporation was under the mayor, Savita Kamble since 15th February ,2024 , the Deputy Mayor is Anand Chavan since 15th February 2024 and the Municipal Commissioner Shri. P.N. Lokesh (KAS). The following various regions will be merged into city corporation; Bastawad, Modaga, Hindalaga, Macche, Halaga, Sambra, Peeranwadi, Dhamane, Kakati, Honaga, Bennali.
