Kapileshwar Temple History
Now let me take you on the historical journey of the ancient Kapileshwar Temple of Belgaum. It is said that the journey of the 12 Jyotirlingas is incomplete without visiting here.
It is said that the Kapileshwar Temple was self-incarnated which means Lord Kapilshwar, incarnation of Lord Shiva, emerged in the form of Linga, called Swayambhu in the local language, and it might have opened for the public in 1000 AD according to the inscriptions found in Kamal Basti.
Over time, the Temple has gone through a lot of transformation, and now apart from the Lord Kapileshwar, there are idols of other Hindu deities including, Lord Ganesha, Lord Hanuman, Sri Sai Baba, Lord Dattatreya, and Nav Graha (Nine Planets).
It is also said that the Temple was established by Maharishi Kapila and that is why the Temple is known as Kapileshwar.
