KITTUR RANI CHENNAMMA ZOO: This zoo provides a friendly environment with tiger safari, good viewing of animals.

Belagavi Zoo was established in the year 1989 at Bhutramanahaati in Kittur Rani Chennamma Nisargadhama, Belagavi district.

The mini zoo is situated at a distance of 12 km from Belagavi City on National Highway-4 in an area of 31.68 Ha.

The zoo has become a hotspot for wildlife enthusiasts with several attractions like the tiger safari, and various animals which includes; Lions, leopards, bear and white peacock.

The Mini Zoo, spread on 125-acre land was once a habitat of spotted dear. The zoo was initially named as Nisarghadhama, of which the sign board is still present in the location.

In the year 2018, the mini zoo was opened with due permission from the central and state zoo authorities, with the efforts made by Minister Satish Jarkiholi, forest official Basavaraj and then DC Mahantesh Hiremath.

The zoo is a home to various kind of animals, which includes; 2 lions, 3 tiger 3 leopard and two bears, 13 foxes, 4 donkey and crocodile, the facility is also home to 198 birds (Plum Headed Parakeet, Javan Sparrow, Emu, Golden Pheasant, Common Peafowl, Jackal ,Demoiselle Crane, Crocodile )of 25 other species.

The top 5 animals of KITTUR RANI CHENNAMMA ZOO are Four Horned Antelope, Spotted Deer, Black Buck, Crocodile and tortorise.

The main objective behind the zoo was for the ex-situ conversation of wild animals and to complement and strengthen the national efforts in conversation of the rich biodiversity by supporting the conservation of endangered species through coordinating breeding under ex-situ conditions and to function as rescue centre for orphaned wild animals.

There are good responses about the zoo from the visitors. There are two vehicles which ferry the visitors to cover 20 hectares of the area of safari. The zoo remains closed on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, an animal adaptation scheme is also implemented to create awareness among the visitors of Wildlife Conservation. Several camps and events are conducted every month which provides awareness and raises concern for the life of animals among students, parents and other participants as well.

The people who are interested to adopt animals or birds to mark any memories can choose animals from categories:  Tiger and lion under ₹1 Lakh, which is under diamond scheme category; other animals and birds in the range of ₹1000 to ₹50000 under the gold, silver and bronze categories.

The revenue that is generated to the Zonal Forest officer is used for the zoo inmates’ upkeep and payment of outsourcing staffs and to create facilities for visitors.

At present, the Zoo falls in ‘Mini Zoo’ Category as per the classification of Zoos by the Central Zoo Authority.
