– Decision was taken by Kolhapur Collector due to a series of landslides amid rainfall

The Belagai to Goa road via Tillari Ghat is closed till October 31 for heavy vehicles due to a series of landslides in the area. This is only for the heavy vehicles passing via Tillari ghat.

The decision was taken by the collector of Kolhapur, Amol Yedage, to avoid any major mishappening due to heavy rainfall in the area leading to landslides. There is a strict ban on the movement of heavy and multi-axle vehicles on SH 189 between km 159 and km 163.

Amol Yadge, in his order, stated, “Due to heavy traffic in the ghat, the vehicle gets stuck on sharp turns, and it becomes difficult to take a crane to remove the vehicle. Even accidents with cranes have taken place here while trying to remove vehicles involved in accidents”

He added, “The heavy vehicles have been diverted via Amboli and Chorla ghats. The work on highway 548H of Sankeshwar- Gadhinglaj- Ajara- Amboli- Banda is in progress and likely to get over by June end.”

There were a few mishappening occurred in the past at Tillari Ghat and it is known for its significantly narrow roads, sharp turns, and steep inclines. Not just this, the traffic is too much on this road as it is one of the connecting roads and vehicles often get stuck at turnings. The past has seen many accidents on this road and this is the main reason why the road has been closed till October 31.

People like to travel via this road as it is well-maintained and well-connected between Belagavi and Goa but it is not for a new driver.

A proper frame is being built at the entrance of the road on both sides to not let any heavy vehicle enter the road. This will be a good move to avoid traffic and let small vehicles like motorcycles and cars move freely.

Alternative Routes for Heavy Vehicles

The heavy vehicles will now move from Chorla, Anmod, or Amboli routes until Oct 31.

Why Tillari Ghat Road is Dangerous

The Tillari Ghat road is dangerous because the road is too narrow, the turns are very sharp, at some parts the roads are steep, and the area is forest, making it difficult for vehicles to move in the heavy traffic.
