
The Belagavi City Corporation has issued a compulsory notice requiring the traders selling tobacco products within city limits to obtain a separate license.
The directive aligns with a 2022 Central Government notification, which requires that dedicated permits must be obtained for the sale of tobacco products.
The application process for the tobacco product license is currently open, with a deadline set of 15th February. The application fees have been set at Rs 500 and the application forms are available at the Belagavi City Corporation Office.
The following documents must be submitted along with the applications of the applicants:
- A Valid trade license issued by the City Corporation;
- Aadhar Card of the Applicant and the establishment owner;
- Proof of Tenancy/Ownership of the Premises, where tobacco products are sold;
- GST Certificate (if registered under GST);
- A letter of Authorization (In case of a representative applying on behalf of the business;
- No objection certificate (NOC) from the local community;
- A recent passport-sized photograph of the applicant.
City Corporation Officials stated that the main aim of the initiative is to regulate tobacco sales more effectively and discourage condiments and tobacco sales in the same location. “We are implementing the directive in compliance with Central Government regulations, which categorize tobacco as a distinct trade.”
In case of failure to obtain the required tobacco sales license by February 15,2025 will result in strict legal action against the violators.
Non-Compliance could lead to penalties, fines or the suspension of both business and tobacco sales licenses.
Additionally, sellers must assure that they hold a valid business license in conjunction with the new tobacco sales license.
