The Belagavi Chamber of Commerce, along with the Belagavi Cloth Merchants Association, Pharmacy Associations, and various other trade organizations, has raised significant concerns regarding the requirements of obtaining a trade license from the City Corporation for establishments that already possess a UDYAM certificate to obtain a separate trade license. In a recent meeting with City Commissioner, Ms. Shubha B ,the concerns were formally presented.
The Chamber highlighted that an amendment to the relevant legal law in the year 2020, exempts businesses registered under the UDYAM certification holders from requiring a additional trade license from municipal authorities.
The Chamber of Commerce has promised to submit a copy of this amendment to the Commissioner’s office for review.
Commissioner Shubha acknowledged the amendment but emphasized that a final decision would be made after she reviews the document, which could take around four to five days.
Currently, The City Corporation mandates a trade license for all businesses, including those holding a holding a valid UDYAM certificate, to obtain a trade license. This policy has raised significant concerns among business owners.
At present, the City Commissioner Shubha B. has assured stakeholders that a definitive resolution to the issue is expected by next week.
The compulsion to obtain a trade license has been a contentious issue in the past. During the tenure of the former Commissioner Nitesh Patil and the previous city Commissioner, the requirement was with drawn for businesses holding a valid UDYAM certificate.
The Belagavi Chamber of Commerce reiterated this precedent during its recent discussions with the City Commissioner and strongly urged the current administration t uphold the exemption for businesses holding a valid UDYAM certificate.
In addition to UDYAM certified businesses, certain sectors, such as pharmaceutical establishments, are already exempt from the requirement of obtaining a trade license.
The Belagavi Chamber of Commerce formally requested the City Corporation to issue a clear and detailed directive regarding trade license requirements to eliminate ambiguity for businesses.
